Plant Traits
Description
A distinctive yellow-flowering form of the familiar Texas native Red Yucca.
Yellow Red Yucca combines the tough, architectural foliage of Hesperaloe parviflora with tall flower stalks carrying yellow blooms rather than the species' more familiar coral-red flowers.
Narrow evergreen leaves form a tidy rosette, while tall flowering stalks rise well above the foliage during the warm season. The tubular flowers attract hummingbirds and other pollinators and provide strong vertical interest without taking up much ground-level space.
🌼 Why it works
- Distinctive yellow-flowering form
- Excellent hummingbird plant
- Extremely heat and drought tolerant once established
- Evergreen architectural foliage
- Excellent choice for designed native landscapes
- Works well individually or planted in groups
- Low maintenance once established
🐦 Wildlife value
The tall flower stalks produce nectar-rich tubular flowers that are particularly attractive to hummingbirds. The flowers are also visited by other pollinating insects.
🌱 Where it thrives
Plant in full sun for the strongest growth and flowering. Yellow Red Yucca performs particularly well in hot, exposed locations where many traditional landscape plants struggle.
- Xeriscapes
- Designed native landscapes
- Pollinator and hummingbird gardens
- Sunny borders
- Mass plantings
- Rock gardens
Soil: Adaptable to a range of soils but performs best with good drainage. Avoid locations that remain consistently wet.
✂️ Growth & maintenance
Very low maintenance once established. Remove spent flower stalks when desired and older damaged foliage as needed. Mature plants gradually develop into larger clumps without becoming aggressively spreading.
💧 Water (establishment note)
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, plants are highly drought tolerant and require little supplemental irrigation.
Important Notes
Despite the common name, Red Yucca is not a true yucca. Its narrow leaves are flexible and lack the rigid, dangerously sharp terminal spines characteristic of many true yuccas and agaves.
