Whale’s Tongue Agave (Agave ovatifolia) is a hardy, drought-tolerant succulent (Zones 7–11) requiring full sun, well-draining soil, and infrequent, deep watering. It grows 3-4 ft high and wide, thrives in poor soil, and needs protection from heavy winter moisture. Low-maintenance, it rarely requires fertilizer.

Key Care Guidelines:
  • Light: Full sun is ideal, though it can handle light afternoon shade in intense heat.
  • Watering: Water deeply but infrequently. Once established, water roughly once a month in winter and weekly or bi-weekly during hot summer months, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.
  • Soil: Requires fast-draining, sandy, or rocky soil. It is susceptible to root rot in heavy, waterlogged clay.
  • Temperature: Hardy to approximately 5 degrees F to 10 degrees F for short periods.
  • Fertilizer: Not required, but a light application of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring can boost growth.
  • Maintenance: Remove dead or damaged lower leaves as necessary, but note that the sap can cause skin irritation.
  • Propagation: This agave typically does not produce offsets ("pups"), so it is mainly propagated by seeds.
Native to the Nuevo León region in northeastern Mexico. It thrives in the mountainous, arid terrains of the Chihuahuan Desert at elevations between 3,700 and 7,000 feet.
Not a true Texas native.
