Description

A highly adaptable native vine with exceptional fall color and wildlife value.

Virginia Creeper is a vigorous woody vine with distinctive leaves made up of five leaflets. It can climb trees, fences, walls, and other structures using adhesive-tipped tendrils, or it can be allowed to spread across the ground as a native groundcover.

Small greenish flowers appear in spring and are followed by blue-black berries that are readily eaten by birds. In fall, the foliage can turn brilliant shades of red, scarlet, purple, and orange.

🌼 Why it works

  • Native to North Texas
  • Excellent fall color
  • Provides fruit for birds
  • Supports native moth caterpillars
  • Provides cover and nesting habitat
  • Can be used as either a vine or groundcover
  • Adaptable from sun to shade
  • Drought tolerant once established

🐦 Wildlife value

Virginia Creeper is an excellent wildlife plant. Its blue-black berries are eaten by songbirds and other wildlife, while its dense foliage provides cover and potential nesting sites.

It is also a larval host for several native moths, including the Virginia Creeper Sphinx, adding valuable caterpillar food to the landscape.

🌱 Where it thrives

Virginia Creeper is highly adaptable and can grow in full sun, part shade, or shade. Fall color and berry production are generally strongest with more sunlight.

  • Woodland and shade gardens
  • Wildlife gardens
  • Walls and fences
  • Naturalized areas
  • Native groundcover plantings

Soil: Adaptable to clay, loam, sand, limestone, rocky soils, and even sites with slower drainage.

βœ‚οΈ Growth & maintenance

Virginia Creeper grows vigorously and may spread well beyond its original planting area if left unchecked. Prune as needed to guide its growth and keep it within the desired space.

Its adhesive-tipped tendrils allow it to climb walls, fences, stone, and other surfaces without a separate support structure.

πŸ’§ Water (establishment note)

Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Virginia Creeper is drought tolerant and generally requires little supplemental irrigation.

Important Notes

Virginia Creeper is a vigorous grower and should be planted where it has room to climb or spread. Its berries provide valuable food for wildlife but are poisonous to people and pets and should not be eaten.
