Description

An uncommon Texas native with delicate star-shaped flowers and an exceptionally long potential bloom season.

Texas Craglily forms clumps of narrow, soft green leaves that resemble an ornamental grass. Slender, branching flower stalks rise above the foliage and carry small yellow to orange-yellow, star-shaped flowers.

Flowers may appear repeatedly from spring through fall, giving this understated perennial a surprisingly long season of interest. Its fine foliage and airy flowers work especially well tucked among other perennials, along borders, or in rock gardens.

🌼 Why it works

  • Texas-native perennial
  • Long potential bloom season
  • Provides nectar for pollinating insects
  • Adaptable to several soil types
  • Drought tolerant once established
  • Fine-textured foliage adds contrast to broader-leaved plants

🐝 Wildlife value

Flowers provide nectar for visiting insects and add another flowering resource to a diverse pollinator garden.

🌱 Where it thrives

Texas Craglily grows in full sun to part shade and is adaptable to a surprisingly broad range of soil conditions. Good drainage is beneficial, particularly when grown outside its native South Texas range.

  • Pollinator gardens
  • Perennial borders
  • Rock gardens
  • Naturalistic plantings
  • Mixed native gardens

Soil: Adaptable to clay, loam, sandy, and rocky soils. Tolerates conditions ranging from seasonally moist to seasonally dry.

βœ‚οΈ Growth & maintenance

Low maintenance once established. Plants grow from underground storage structures and gradually develop into clumps. Established clumps may increase over time and can be divided if desired.

πŸ’§ Water (establishment note)

Water regularly during establishment. Once established, plants are drought tolerant but may perform and flower better with occasional supplemental water during extended dry periods.

Important Notes

Texas Craglily is native to South and southeastern Texas rather than North Texas. It has nevertheless proven hardy in cultivation farther north when provided appropriate growing conditions.
