Plant Traits
Description
A native bunchgrass that turns into a soft purple haze when it flowers.
Purple Lovegrass forms low clumps of fine-textured green foliage for much of the growing season. In late summer, airy branching flower panicles emerge above the leaves and develop shades of reddish purple, creating a soft cloud of color that moves beautifully in the wind.
The flowering display is especially effective when several plants are grouped together, but individual plants can also provide fine texture and movement among broader-leaved perennials.
πΌ Why it works
- Airy reddish-purple late-season flowers
- Excellent fine texture and movement
- Highly drought tolerant once established
- Supports native insects and grassland wildlife
- Works especially well planted in groups
- Fits both prairie-style and designed landscapes
- Low maintenance once established
π¦ Wildlife value
Purple Lovegrass contributes food and structure to native grassland habitat. Its foliage serves as a host for native skipper caterpillars, while its seeds may be used by birds and other wildlife.
π± Where it thrives
Purple Lovegrass performs best in full sun and relatively dry, well-drained soil. It is particularly useful in hot, exposed locations and landscapes where supplemental irrigation will be limited.
- Prairie and meadow gardens
- Designed native landscapes
- Sunny borders
- Mass plantings
- Rock gardens
- Xeriscapes
Soil: Adaptable to a range of soils but performs best where drainage is good. Avoid consistently wet locations.
βοΈ Growth & maintenance
Leave flowering stems standing into winter for structure and wildlife value, then cut back old growth in late winter before new spring growth begins.
Purple Lovegrass can reseed where conditions are favorable. Seedlings can be retained to create a larger naturalistic planting or removed where a more controlled design is desired.
π§ Water (establishment note)
Water regularly during establishment. Once established, Purple Lovegrass is drought tolerant and generally requires little supplemental irrigation.
