Plant Traits
Description
A bold Texas-native agave built for heat, drought, rocky soils, and dramatic year-round structure.
Havard Agave is native to the Chihuahuan Desert of far West Texas and surrounding areas. It forms a substantial rosette of thick, blue-gray leaves edged and tipped with prominent spines. Its strong geometric form makes it equally at home in a native xeric planting or a more formal, design-forward landscape.
Despite its desert origins, Havard Agave is notably cold hardy. In North Texas, the most important consideration is excellent drainage, particularly during cool, wet weather.
🌼 Why it works
- Texas-native desert species
- Exceptional drought tolerance
- Excellent cold tolerance for an agave
- Bold blue-gray evergreen foliage
- Strong architectural form
- Extremely low maintenance once established
🐦 Wildlife value
Mature Havard Agaves flower only once, producing a towering flower stalk with nectar-rich blooms that attract insects, hummingbirds, and nectar-feeding bats.
After flowering and producing seed, the mature rosette dies—a natural part of the agave life cycle.
🌱 Where it thrives
Best in full sun and exceptionally well-drained soil. Havard Agave is naturally adapted to arid, rocky environments and is an excellent choice for landscapes where supplemental irrigation is limited.
- Xeriscape and water-wise landscapes
- Rock gardens
- Native Texas landscapes
- Design-forward landscapes
- Large specimen plantings
Soil: Requires excellent drainage. Rocky, gravelly, or sharply drained soils are ideal. Avoid locations where water collects or soil remains wet for extended periods.
✂️ Growth & maintenance
Slow growing and extremely low maintenance once established. Give the rosette adequate room to reach its mature size without interfering with walkways or high-traffic areas.
💧 Water (establishment note)
Water occasionally during establishment, allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Once established, it requires very little supplemental water.
Important Notes
Leaves have sharp terminal spines and toothed margins. Place well away from sidewalks, play areas, and other locations where people or pets may brush against the plant.
Excellent drainage is especially important in North Texas, where winter moisture can be more challenging than winter cold.
