Allium tuberosum (garlic chives) is a hardy herbaceous perennial that returns every year. It grows in clumps, spreads via seeds or underground rhizomes, and dies back to the crown in winter, returning in early spring. These plants are hardy in zones 3-11 and are known to be aggressive, often self-seeding.
- Lifespan: Perennial (usually lives for several years, often 8+ in ideal conditions).
- Appearance: Flat, grass-like leaves with white, star-shaped flowers appearing in late summer to fall.
- Habit: Clump-forming, spreading, and upright.
- Uses: Culinary (garlic-flavored leaves) and ornamental.
- Maintenance: Easy to grow, but requires deadheading to prevent excessive self-seeding.
Not native.
