Plant Traits
Description
A charming little native wildflower with flowers unlike almost anything else in the garden.
Barbara’s Buttons forms a compact clump of foliage topped by slender flowering stems bearing rounded, button-like flower heads. The soft pink, lavender-pink, or nearly white blooms have a delicate pincushion appearance and attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects.
Its relatively small size makes it especially useful near the front of a native planting, where taller prairie species can sometimes overwhelm smaller plants. It also fits easily into more traditional perennial borders and rock gardens.
🌱 Locally collected & organically grown
These plants were organically grown from seed collected locally, helping preserve plant material already adapted to the conditions of our area. Locally sourced native plants can also help maintain the ecological relationships between native plants, insects, birds, and other wildlife in our region.
🌼 Why it works
- Organically grown from locally collected seed
- Native to North Texas
- Distinctive button-shaped flowers
- Compact enough for smaller gardens
- Provides nectar and pollen for native pollinators
- Works well near the front of borders and prairie plantings
- Excellent addition to rock gardens and low-water landscapes
- Fits both naturalistic and intentionally designed native gardens
🐝 Wildlife value
Barbara’s Buttons provides floral resources for native bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects. Adding early-season and spring-blooming native plants helps extend the period during which a garden provides food for pollinators.
🌱 Where it thrives
Plant Barbara’s Buttons in full sun to light part shade in well-drained soil. It is particularly well suited to open, rocky, or prairie-like sites and performs best where its roots are not kept consistently wet.
- Pollinator gardens
- Sunny perennial borders
- Prairie and meadow plantings
- Rock gardens
- Designed native landscapes
- Low-water gardens
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil and is well suited to rocky, limestone-influenced, and relatively lean soils. Avoid consistently wet locations.
✂️ Growth & maintenance
Barbara’s Buttons is a compact perennial that develops into a small clump rather than spreading aggressively. Once established, it requires little maintenance.
Allowing some flower heads to mature and produce seed can encourage natural regeneration and provides an opportunity for this locally sourced native to establish a continuing presence in suitable gardens.
💧 Water (establishment note)
Water regularly during establishment while allowing the soil to drain between waterings. Once established, Barbara’s Buttons is relatively drought tolerant, although occasional supplemental water during prolonged dry periods can support flowering and growth.
